Stats of interest to church leaders

This page aims to put you in touch with census statistics you may find useful. Click any of the one-letter links below to see various maps & charts. This site is most useful with a reasonable sized screen and a mouse.

Most things here are from the 2021 census. 2026 census stats will be available in mid-late 2027, at which time I might update things here.

People are often interested in demographic data for their area, and I usually direct them first to the ABS QuickStats page for their area. On that page you can type any area in the search box. Or you can browse the default map M 547me1li (you can zoom in & out to get different geographical levels) and click any area, then click the QuickStats link.

There's enough in QuickStats that you may not want any more, but here's a few other things.
L bnk42v5f Full list of languages spoken. You can click Residence and change the area covered.
L inba7eky Full list of countries of birth.
L fawq0uvl Full list of religious affiliation.

Here are some maps showing how things vary geographically.

M bd0u8735 Proportion of people born in Australia. Move the mouse around to see details. You can click Birthplace and change to any country to see the proportion born there.
M uyo9w5n7 Proportion of people who speak only English. Click Language and choose any language in the list to see its number of speakers across the map.
M sdjczaf6 Proportion of people aged 0-9.
M oaebqury Index of Advantage and Disadvantage. 1000 is the national average.

For something other than census data, M 1zyapglj a map of local churches in Adelaide, which I compiled from various sources long ago. There will be plenty missing.

That's it for the short version. More maps, stats, explanation and links to other stuff below. If there's something you'd like to see or learn about, you can call me any time - 0421253504 or ericlove5014@gmail.com.

I've written two longer articles in the same format as this:
Statistics of ethnic groups in South Australia
Counting Christians in the Australian census

GeoMiss project: More of what I do (you may have come here via that site)

This website, called Mappage, started as a multi-purpose tool for showing things on a Google Map and grew into a huge system for navigating the mountains of data provided by the ABS and ways of looking at it. It's not all that user-friendly and I use it for many different things. As of 2026, I'm hoping to revamp it further.

M zcby5qir The proportion identifying as any sort of Christian in the census. Click Religion and change to any religion or denomination. (My Counting Christians article linked above discusses issues around estimating the relative proportion of active Christians from census denominational figures).

M f6n983jo Ethnic minority churches - a subset of the larger collection above.

Some even more data-heavy charts...
S w3q4vm2t Religious affiliation by language spoken; S 9grbehm4 excluding English-only. you can use the scroll wheel on the left margin to scroll it further. You can click "Residence" to narrow which area's population is covered, but in this case it only goes down to SA3 level (two steps below state).
S twvpzfou Religion by country of birth; S cet0ivok excluding Australia.
S pe7x3q0u Religion by age.

There's no end of data available and I'm always happy to help anyone access it. The hard part is what to do with it.
